Arthur Hayes Dumps $22M of ETH, ENA and UNI: “We Gotta Go Down to Go Up”

Arthur Hayes dumps ETH, ENA and UNI: his X post "I dumped it all" next to a CLOSED sign on the Maelstrom trading desk, a $22.28M SOLD sticker and a warning about 45 fake ETH transfers

The short version

  • Arthur Hayes sold the whole directional book at his family office Maelstrom on Saturday morning, about $22.28 million of tokens by Lookonchain’s count, led by 6,400 ETH worth $15.2 million plus ENA, UNI, ETHFI, AERO, PENDLE and ZAMA.
  • He blames “dicey” macro and geopolitics four days before the October 28 Fed decision, seven weeks after he set $10,000, $0.50 and $2 targets for Ethereum, ENA and ETHFI; scammers then flooded his wallet with 45 fake ETH transfers to look-alike addresses.
  • The crew is watching $2,318, the 200-day EMA and the October 15 low, as Ethereum’s line to hold, with $2,424 as the level to reclaim.

Arthur Hayes just emptied the trading desk. On Saturday morning the BitMEX co-founder sold the whole directional book at Maelstrom, his family office, and Lookonchain counted about $22.28 million of tokens on the way out, led by 6,400 ETH worth $15.2 million. Ethereum is down 2.8% in 24 hours at $2,325 at the time of writing.

Hayes didn’t hide it. Four minutes after the trackers flagged the wallets, he posted the reason himself:

I dumped it all. The Maelstrom directional book, took profits on $ETH, $ENA, $UNI and other shitcoins. I think we gotta go down to go up. It looks a bit dicey out there in macro and geopolitical land. Going to sit on the sidelines and wait for the all clear signal … Brrrrr

So what exactly did he sell, why now, four days before the Fed, and what does it mean for the rest of us? And why did scammers show up in his wallet history before the last ETH had even landed?

What Did Arthur Hayes Sell?

Arthur Hayes sold seven tokens worth about $22.28 million, according to Lookonchain. Ethereum was more than two thirds of it:

TokenAmountValue
ETH6,400$15.2M
ENA (Ethena)14 million$2.76M
UNI (Uniswap)323,000$2.24M
ETHFI1.89 million$1.23M
AERO (Aerodrome)546,609$398K
PENDLE120,000$244K
ZAMA3 million$214K

The coins went out through the usual exits for a fund this size. Onchain Lens tracked the ENA to Binance, the UNI and ZAMA to the market maker Wintermute and the ETHFI to FalconX, an institutional broker.

The ETH number may be on the low side. The wallet’s own history shows four transfers out between 05:55 and 06:14 UTC, 1,600, 1,600, 3,200 and 1,600 ETH, which adds up to 8,000 ETH, about $19 million at the $2,378 ETH traded at the time. One of them went straight on to a Binance hot wallet less than two minutes later. The same wallet had received 8,012 ETH on October 15, so the ETH stayed for nine days.

Why Is Arthur Hayes Selling Now?

Arthur Hayes says it is macro, not crypto. “It looks a bit dicey out there in macro and geopolitical land,” he wrote, and he will “sit on the sidelines and wait for the all clear signal.” His short version: “I think we gotta go down to go up.”

The timing lines up with a busy week. The Fed decides on rates on Wednesday, October 28, with traders pricing a hold, and Bitcoin sits at $79,900 after slipping under $80,000 on Saturday. Hayes trades the dollar and the yen as much as he trades coins, and a man who reads the macro first is stepping out before the week that tests it.

The striking part is how fast the view changed. In his September 2 essay, Hayes called Ethereum, ENA and ETHFI Maelstrom’s “speculative short-term end of 2026 bets”, with targets of $10,000, $0.50 and $2. He sold all three seven weeks later:

TokenPrice on Sept 2Hayes’ 2026 targetSold near
Ethereum$2,392$10,000$2,378
ENA$0.149$0.50$0.196
ETHFI$0.562$2$0.647

ENA and ETHFI rose 31% and 15% since that essay, so “took profits” fits them. Ethereum went nowhere. Hayes didn’t publish his entry prices, so the real profit on the whole book is unknown, and he said nothing about Bitcoin, which the same essay called Maelstrom’s “structural” long. A directional book is the bets on price; a family office can keep a core position and hedges outside it.

None of this is a signal to copy. Hayes runs his own money on his own time frame and can buy it all back in an afternoon, and he has changed his mind in public before. What his exit does tell you is that one of crypto’s loudest bulls now wants cash going into the Fed.

Scammers Tried to Poison Arthur Hayes’ Wallet Within Minutes

The first scam showed up three minutes after the first sale. At 05:58 UTC, a fake token called “ETH” logged a 1,600 “ETH” transfer from Hayes’ wallet to an address that starts with 0xab3F and ends with 9532, the same first and last four characters as the real address he had just paid. By 08:57 UTC the explorer showed 45 of these fake transfers from six fake tokens, aimed at 14 look-alike addresses, plus 18 tiny or zero-value transactions from look-alike wallets.

This is address poisoning. Scammers can’t take anything from the wallet, so they fill its history with copies of the real deposit addresses and wait. If the owner later copies an address from his history to send the next 1,600 ETH, there is a good chance he grabs a fake one. Some fake tokens even spell “ETH” with Cyrillic and Greek letters so a filter that looks for the real name misses them.

There is no sign it worked. Every real ETH transfer went to the intended address.

Watch out. Address poisoning goes after anyone who moves size. Before you send:

  • Never copy an address from your transaction history. Copy it fresh from the exchange deposit page or your saved address book.
  • Check more than the first and last four characters. Compare six to eight in the middle as well.
  • Send a small test amount first when the transfer is large, and confirm it arrived before you send the rest.
  • Ignore tokens you didn’t buy, and never approve or swap them.

Ethereum Price Analysis: Can ETH Hold $2,318 After the Hayes Sale?

Ethereum price daily chart ETHUSDT with 50 and 200 EMA, October 15 to 24 shaded, resistance $2,424, support $2,318 and 0.5 Fib $2,157

The Ethereum price is testing its last line of support. ETH trades at $2,325, right on the 200-day EMA at $2,318, which is also the October 15 low, and under the 50-day EMA at $2,469. Every bounce since early October has made a lower high.

The levels the crew is watching:

  • Bull case: a daily close back above $2,424, the mid-October swing high, would put the sale behind it and bring the 50-day EMA at $2,469 into play.
  • Base case: a range between $2,318 and $2,424 into Wednesday’s Fed decision, where ETH closed on six of the last nine days.
  • Bear case: a daily close under $2,318 loses the 200-day EMA and opens $2,157, the halfway point of the June to September rally from $1,506 to $2,807.

Arthur Hayes sold before the Fed so he doesn’t have to guess what it does. For everyone still holding, $2,318 is where the answer shows first.
