The short version
- a16z crypto is now a16z frontier: Andreessen Horowitz took “crypto” out of the name, and its $2.2 billion fifth fund will back AI and robotics too.
- It matters because the biggest crypto-only venture fund, $9.8 billion raised since 2018, now splits its checks with AI, and partner Ali Yahya is leaving.
- The crew is watching where a16z frontier’s next deals go: token projects mean the rename was mostly branding, robots and AI labs mean crypto lost its biggest dedicated backer.
The biggest name in crypto venture capital just took “crypto” off its door. a16z crypto, the blockchain fund of Andreessen Horowitz, is now called a16z frontier, and its $2.2 billion fifth fund will now back AI and robotics too. On the same day, general partner Ali Yahya said he is leaving to start a company.
Five months ago, an a16z crypto spokesperson told Fortune the new fund was “100% dedicated to investing in crypto entrepreneurs.” So is the firm that backed Coinbase, Solana and Uniswap walking away?
Leo Schwartz of The Information broke the story on Thursday morning:
What Did a16z Actually Announce?
A wider fund, not a closed one. Chris Dixon, who started a16z crypto in 2018 with $350 million, confirmed the rename hours later in an article on X. The fund now looks for “frontier startups”: companies building new technologies and creating markets that may take years to grow up.
“This is an expansion: we will continue to invest in crypto and related ventures and advocate for sensible crypto regulation,” Dixon wrote. His argument is that the crypto label stopped meaning much. “Wall Street and fintech companies now regularly launch products built on blockchains. Does that make them crypto companies? The label matters less now.”
The new list covers AI-powered products, autonomous machines and networks that link people with AI agents. Dixon sees blockchains as the payment rail between those machines. He keeps running the fund with Marc Andreessen, Ben Horowitz and general partners Eddy Lazzarin and Guy Wuollet.

Why Is Ali Yahya Leaving a16z?
To build his own company. Yahya joined in 2017 from Google Brain as the crypto team’s first full-time hire and made general partner in 2021. He announced the move himself late on Thursday:
Big personal news today: I have decided to leave @a16z, move to SF, and start a company.
It's time to build 🙂
It has been almost 10 years since I joined the firm. I met @cdixon, @bhorowitz, and @pmarca in 2017. At the time, I was an engineer at Google Brain working on
He gave few details beyond a move to San Francisco and early work on infrastructure for the “open software ecosystem.” Losing a founding partner on the day of a rename looks bad, but the timing alone proves nothing about why.
Is a16z Crypto the Only Fund Moving Into AI?
No, it is the fourth big one this year. Paradigm raised $1.2 billion in July to invest in AI and robotics as well as crypto. Haun Ventures raised $1 billion in May and said financial services “includes crypto, but is bigger than that tool set alone.” Framework Ventures raised $400 million in June for AI, energy, fintech and tokenization, CoinDesk reported.
The fund sizes tell the rest. a16z raised $4.5 billion for crypto in 2022, months after the last bull market peaked. The fifth fund is less than half that, and all five together come to $9.8 billion.
In other words, venture firms follow the money, and right now the money is in AI. Bitcoin trades at $81,749 at the time of writing, about 35% below its October 2025 high of $126,080, and startup funding usually cools with prices.
What Does the a16z Frontier Rename Mean for Crypto?
Less than the headline suggests, at least for now. The crypto portfolio stays, the policy team keeps pushing for clear US rules, and the $2.2 billion was raised with crypto in mind. Some of it now goes elsewhere.
The real change is for founders. A crypto startup now competes with AI and robotics companies for the same checks at its biggest backer. Projects that put AI agents, payments or real-world assets onchain should find that easier. A pure token play will find it harder.

For traders, the useful signal is where a16z frontier writes its next checks. If the next deals still carry tokens, the rename was mostly branding. If they go to robots and AI labs, crypto lost its biggest dedicated backer without a single coin being sold.
