Bitcoin vs Gold in 2026: Both Are Down, and Neither Worked as a Hedge

Bitcoin is down 8.8% since January 1 and gold about 7%, the two worst major assets of 2026. Oil, stocks and even cash did better. Here is why.

The short version

  • Bitcoin vs gold in 2026: Bitcoin is down 8.8% since January 1 at $79,930 and gold about 7% at $4,019 an ounce, the two worst major assets of the year.
  • Neither worked as a hedge because 2026 paid whatever earns interest: the Fed hiked in September, the 10-year yield rose from 4.16% to 4.99%, and oil (+80%), stocks (+12%) and cash (+2.9%) all did better.
  • The crew is watching the Fed decision on October 28 at 18:00 UTC (2:00 p.m. in Washington), Bitcoin’s 50-day average at $81,866 and gold’s July low near $3,990.

Bitcoin vs gold was supposed to be the big argument of 2026. Ten months in, both sides are losing. Bitcoin trades at $79,930 at the time of writing, down 8.8% from $87,648 on January 1. Gold sits near $4,019 an ounce, down about 7% on the year.

This is a year with inflation at 3.7%, a Fed that hiked, oil up 80% and missiles over shipping lanes. In other words, exactly the kind of year a hedge is bought for. So why did both of them lose money?

Charlie Bilello, chief market strategist at Creative Planning, put the two at the bottom of his table of major assets on Sunday:

Bitcoin (-7.3%) and Gold (-7.5%) are the two worst performing major assets so far in 2026. This is something we haven't seen before in any calendar year.

How Bad Has 2026 Been for Bitcoin vs Gold?

Bad enough to finish last. In Bilello’s numbers to October 23, Bitcoin was down 7.3% and gold 7.5%, behind every major stock, bond and commodity fund he tracks. Plain US cash in Treasury bills made 2.9%. Bitcoin has slipped another 1.5 points since then.

The two got there by very different roads. Gold was the star of January: it hit a record near $5,600 an ounce on January 29, up about 29% in four weeks. Then Trump picked Kevin Warsh to run the Fed on January 30, and gold futures fell 11% in one session. It never got back. It now trades 28% below that record.

Bitcoin peaked early. Its 2026 high was $97,924 on January 14, and it started falling two weeks before gold did. It fell as low as $57,800 on July 1, down 34% on the year, before clawing back. Today it sits 37% under its October 2025 record of $126,198 and is on course for a second losing year in a row after 2025’s 6.3% drop.

Why Didn’t Bitcoin or Gold Work as a Hedge This Year?

Because 2026 rewarded whatever paid interest, and neither of them does. The Fed raised rates by a quarter point on September 16, its first move of the year, to 3.75% to 4.00%. The 10-year Treasury yield went from 4.16% at the start of the year to 4.99% today, after a close of 5.31% on October 5, its highest since 2002.

When a government bond pays almost 5%, holding a metal or a coin that pays nothing gets expensive. The dollar also rose 3.8%, and gold is priced in dollars. That’s two headwinds for gold in a year that should have suited it.

What each asset did in 2026 so far: Brent oil +80.5%, S&P 500 +12.1%, US dollar index +3.8%, gold (PAXG) −7.1%, Bitcoin −8.8%, Ethereum −21.9%What each asset did in 2026 so far: Brent oil +80.5%, S&P 500 +12.1%, US dollar index +3.8%, gold (PAXG) −7.1%, Bitcoin −8.8%, Ethereum −21.9%

The real winner of the inflation scare was the thing causing it. Brent crude went from $60.85 to $109.82 as the Middle East war kept hitting tankers near the Strait of Hormuz. Stocks rose too, with the S&P 500 up 12.1% on the AI trade.

Bitcoin, meanwhile, kept trading like a tech stock with extra leverage. It sold off with the Nasdaq on the bad days and didn’t follow it on the good ones. That’s the opposite of a hedge.

Put both on the same scale and the gap in the middle of the year is huge. At the end of February, gold was up 24% and Bitcoin down 24%, a gap of 47 points. By late October the lines have nearly met again.

For context, one Bitcoin bought 20.2 ounces of gold on January 1. It buys 19.8 ounces today. After ten months of Bitcoin vs gold headlines, the score between them has barely moved. Both just lost to cash.

What Would Make Bitcoin and Gold Hedges Again?

Lower real yields, mostly. The Fed decides on Wednesday, October 28, at 18:00 UTC (2:00 p.m. in Washington). Traders expect a hold. A hint from Warsh that the September hike was the last one would help both. A hint that December brings another would hurt both.

The levels that matter for the Bitcoin price:

  • Resistance: $81,866. The 50-day moving average (MA), the average close of the last 50 days. Bitcoin has closed below it every day since October 22.
  • Support: $79,220. Saturday’s low, the lowest price of October.
  • Below that: $73,064. The 200-day MA, the long-term trend line.

The gold price sits just above its July low near $3,990. A daily close below that would mean a fresh 2026 low.

TRAIL MAP: Bitcoin Cycles and the Halving: What Four Cycles of Data Actually Show

A hedge is only as good as the year you need it. In 2026, the year looked like inflation, and the inflation trade was oil. If both are still red on December 31, the “store of value” argument goes into 2027 with nothing to show for either side.
